Chegom · analytical meditation
Examining a teaching or experience through reasoning and reflection to deepen understanding and transform the mind.
Inquiry as meditation
Chegom (Tibetan dpyad sgom) uses reasoned examination rather than keeping attention fixed on one object. A practitioner might reflect on impermanence, the causes of suffering or the reasons for cultivating compassion. The aim is to make the teaching meaningful in experience.
Analysis and placement
Analytical reflection can lead into jokgom: resting with the understanding or state that has developed. The Dalai Lama presents these methods as working together. Analytical meditation should not be equated with all forms or levels of insight; different Tibetan traditions explain the relationship in their own ways.
