Empowerment

An initiation into a particular tantric practice and lineage, understood as awakening the potential for realization and establishing a foundation for practice.

Sanskrit: abhiṣeka · Tibetan: wang (dbang) · Also called initiation

Entering a practice and its transmission

In Tibetan Buddhist tantra, an empowerment is a ritual through which a qualified teacher introduces a student to a particular mandala and practice. It is traditionally understood to activate capacities for awakening and establish conditions for their development through sustained practice.

The relationship includes a living lineage, an intention to awaken for others, and the ethical commitments of the transmission. The meaning of a ceremony becomes clearer alongside the teaching and practice it opens.

Related forms of transmission

Empowerment · wang

Initiation into a tantric mandala and its practice, with the authorizations and commitments belonging to that ceremony.

Subsequent permission · jenang

A ceremony connected with a particular Buddha figure. Berzin distinguishes it from a full empowerment and explains that its role depends on the empowerments already received.

Oral transmission · lung

A lineage holder transmits a text, mantra or practice through recitation. FPMT describes this as its own form of transmission. “Lung” here names oral transmission; the Tibetan word for subtle wind is written rlung.

Practice instruction

Explanation and personal guidance help a student understand how to practice what has been transmitted. Empowerment, preparation and continued training work together.

Chakrasamvara and the Six Yogas

Chakrasamvara (Cakrasaṃvara), also called Heruka in this setting, names a meditational Buddha figure and its tantric system. A Chakrasamvara empowerment is initiation into that system.

In Serkong Rinpoche’s explanation of the Six Yogas of Naropa, Chakrasamvara is one qualifying empowerment. He also names Hevajra and Vajrayogini, and accepts Kālacakra in that presentation.

His account places empowerment within a larger preparation: the foundations of the path, bodhisattva and tantric vows, and proficiency in generation-stage practice. The Six Yogas are completion-stage methods taught within that setting; the teacher responsible for a particular transmission specifies its prerequisites.

Understanding what is being offered

In the Tibetan account presented by Berzin, receiving an empowerment involves conscious participation and acceptance of its vows. Some ceremonies also welcome people who attend for inspiration or as observers. The teacher can explain which forms of participation are offered and what each entails.

Vows, samaya commitments and any daily practice are specific to the transmission. Useful questions include which practice the ceremony authorizes, what preparation is expected, and what continuing instruction and commitments accompany it.

A Shingon example

Kongōbu-ji describes kechien kanjō as a ceremony establishing a connection with the Buddhas of a mandala, open to laypeople as well as clergy. This example shows why the purpose and requirements of an initiation are best understood in its own tradition.
