The Pure Land sūtras

Mahāyāna · Amitābha traditions

Original study guide

Original summary of a group of scriptures.

East Asian Pure Land traditions especially value the larger and shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha scriptures and the Contemplation Sūtra.

These texts describe Amitābha, vows connected with awakening, and Sukhāvatī, a Buddha-field whose conditions support spiritual progress.

Recollection of the Buddha, aspiration, devotion and contemplation become bases for practice. Later teachers differ on effort, entrusting, recitation and how to interpret the Pure Land.

Hōnen and Shinran inherit these scriptures through earlier interpreters, especially Shandao. Their writings are commentarial and teaching works, not the original sūtras.
